Systems Engineering
Nowadays, many technical products are often equipped with embedded electrical components as well as automation subsystems and elements. The awareness and importance of the software and hardware co-design and interaction is increasing. Thus, technical products have to be planned as one integrated system from the very beginning. Therefore, a discipline combining the knowledge of electrical engineering, computer science and production/mechanical engineering is becoming essential. The need for qualifications in all of the three mentioned fields arises following the goal of interdisciplinary system development forming successful individuals.
The bachelor’s programme Systems Engineering is carried out by the three faculties:
• Faculty 01: Physics / Electrical Engineering,
• Faculty 03: Mathematics / Computer Science, and
• Faculty 04: Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering (leading faculty).
Thus, the interdisciplinary study programme offers qualifications in the three basic disciplines: electrical engineering, computer science and production/mechanical engineering. Students obtain interdisciplinary working methods by observing technical systems holistically. In the later course of their studies, students should acquire specific knowledge in one of the offered specialisation areas:
o Automation technology and robotics,
o Embedded systems and system software,
o Production engineering or
o o Space engineering.
Bachelor graduates in the subject of Systems Engineering have a very broad field of work e.g. development, programming and maintenance of complex facilities and systems in industry. Furthermore, they can apply their knowledge and skills in companies and organizations by managing schedules or working in the technical EDP area. In addition, being awarded with the title Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Systems Engineering graduates are excellently prepared for further master studies in e.g. the Systems Engineering master's programme at the University of Bremen.
The Bachelor’s programme comprises 210 credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System. This corresponds to a standard period of study of 7 semesters.
Study contents:
In addition to the basic knowledge and skill set in the three core disciplines of the programme (electrical engineering, computer science and production/mechanical engineering) which are anchored in the first semesters of the curriculum, students learn interdisciplinary ways of thinking and working. They experience and learn to apply structured and methodological approaches to the given technical problems. They learn to rethink conventional solutions and replace them with often cheaper and more powerful integrated systems.
The Systems Engineering bachelor's programme offers students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in one specialisation area:
• Automation technology and robotics,
• Embedded systems and system software,
• Production engineering,
• o Space engineering.
During the first semesters, students mainly learn the basics of the three core disciplines. Later on a number of complementary and free elective modules (incl. general studies courses) are given. An obligatory internship (10 weeks) which can be completed in Germany or abroad is part of the curriculum.
The study plan is a recommendation for the course of study. Students can attend the modules in a different order.

Application procedure
The Systems Engineering Bachelor’s programme is restricted in admission.
The application’s deadline for first-year students is 15th July for the winter semester. Advanced students can also begin their studies in the summer semester, deadline: 15th January .
Exceptions in the pandemic year 2021
The application deadline for the winter semester 2021/22 has been extended to July 31, 2021 for all Bachelor's degree programs.
